It is mainly used in turning operations to drill a center hole at the end of a workpiece for positioning and support, used together with a lathe center to clamp the workpiece.

What is a center drill used for?

Center drill is a special type of drill used to create a conical hole at a designated position on a workpiece as a reference. This hole provides guidance for subsequent drills or reamers, or is used in conjunction with a lathe center for positioning and support.

Why is a center drill needed?

Based on our experience, when using large-diameter drills for machining, eccentricity may occur. Using a center drill for pre-drilling can provide accurate positioning and guiding.

In addition, when machining on a lathe, if the workpiece extends too far outward, it may vibrate during turning, affecting accuracy and creating safety risks.

In this case, you need to use a center drill to create a conical hole at the end of the workpiece and clamp it with a live or dead center, which can reduce operational risk and improve machining accuracy.

What is the difference between a center drill and a spot drill?

Center drills and spot drills overlap to some extent in their machining functions, as both can be used for positioning before formal drilling.

The difference is that a center drill can be used not only for positioning but also for machining countersinks (center holes).

Spot drill is only used to break the surface and create a conical indentation to guide the drill bit.
