Ultimate FAQ Guide to Carbide Micro End Mills
What is a micro end mill?

Generally, end mills with a cutting diameter smaller than 3 mm are referred to as micro end mills.
They offer extremely high precision and are used for machining very small parts.
They are widely applied in molds, medical devices, aerospace, and electronics industries.
How many types of micro end mills are there?
By size classification:
Micro end mills: 1–3 mm
Ultra-micro end mills: 0.2–1 mm
By type:
Flat end: for machining micro slots
Corner radius: for machining micro slots and simple curved surfaces
Ball nose: for fine machining of complex surfaces
In addition, different design approaches are applied for different materials, such as general steel, ultra-hard materials, graphite, fiberglass, acrylic, etc.
What are micro end mills used for?
Micro end mills are used for precision machining and engraving of high-precision, small-size parts.
Main applications include:
Precision parts machining: mobile phone frames, PCB traces, micro components in electronic devices.
Mold manufacturing: micro molds and precision injection mold cavities and contour machining.
Medical devices: surgical instruments, precision implants.
Aerospace: instruments and control system components.
Watchmaking industry: high-precision micro part machining.
Precautions for using micro end mills
Due to the extremely small cutting diameter, micro end mills are very easy to break. When using them, you need to pay attention to the following factors:
Stable clamping: High-precision, low runout clamping is essential. Even slight runout can cause uneven cutting forces and lead to tool breakage.
Strict control of cutting parameters: Cutting parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut must be carefully controlled to avoid overload. Parameters should be adjusted according to the material and machining precision.
Effective heat dissipation: Proper cooling is required during machining. Use cutting fluid and ensure sufficient flow.
Careful handling and storage: Avoid collisions during handling and storage, and avoid direct contact with the cutting edges.
If you have questions about end mills:
“I don’t know which end mill to use.”
“What can this end mill achieve?”
“I have an additional precision machining plan and don’t know how to execute it.”
