What Materials are Square End Mills Made of?

Depending on the machining application, square end mills are typically made from the following materials:

General High-Speed Steel (HSS)
Commonly used for machining general materials such as aluminum alloys, copper alloys, steel, and cast iron. Cost-effective.

Powder Metallurgy High-Speed Steel (PM HSS)
HRC 63–70. High wear resistance and high-temperature performance (retains hardness up to 600 °C). Overall performance is better than general HSS.

Carbide
Extremely high hardness and wear resistance, with good hot hardness and compressive strength. Suitable for machining various steels (including stainless steel), cast iron, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, and titanium alloys. Especially suitable for high-speed cutting, heavy material removal, and both roughing and finishing of hard materials.

Cermet end mill
Suitable for machining difficult materials. Provides very high surface finish and is suitable for stable interrupted cutting conditions. Its high-temperature resistance is better than that of carbide end mills, but it has lower toughness and is more brittle, making it prone to edge chipping.
